Rise in childhood obesity in girls causing infertility: Doctors

 DTMT Network
GHAZIABAD : An alarming rise in the number of overweight kids, especially girls who grow into obese teens and adults, is one of the preventable but inevitable causes of infertility in women, say doctors at the Columbia Asia Hospital, Ghaziabad.

The physicians suggest that a serious lifestyle disorder such as a poor diet high on calories and low on nutrition, peer pressure, and near-absence of outdoor activity are the primary reasons of irregular body mass index in teenage girls.

This often hints to chronic health conditions such as polycystic ovary disease (PCOD). This in turn contributes to anovulation and other menstrual irregularities, reduced conception rate, and a reduced response to fertility healing.

“Women who come to us with issues such as irregular periods also show a consistent trend of carrying extra weight as adolescents. Most obese women with infertility and symptoms co-related with androgen excess are affected by polycystic ovarian syndrome. Many of these affected women were able to reduce weight and conceive and complete their pregnancy successfully, but not all,” said Dr. Neera Bhan.

“Lifestyle modifications are the best way to achieve and sustain weight loss, including regulated dieting, regular exercise, mental behavior therapy and a supportive group atmosphere,” Dr. Bhan suggested.
