From Recovery to Tragedy: Shooting Coach Jaspal Rana Dies After Rare Cardiac Rupture Following Heart Attack
Renowned shooting coach and former international shooter Jaspal Rana was showing encouraging signs of recovery after suffering a severe heart attack, but a sudden and rare complication claimed his life, leaving the sporting community shocked.
Rana, who was undergoing treatment at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket, had initially arrived in a critical condition after suffering a heart attack that doctors said had already occurred three days earlier while he was travelling. Despite the severity of his condition, he responded well to treatment and showed significant improvement.
According to Dr. Balbir Singh, Group Chairman – Cardiac Sciences, Pan Max and Chief of Interventional Cardiology and Electrophysiology at Max Super Speciality Hospital, Saket**, Rana was brought to the hospital with a delayed heart attack and severe cardiac complications.
“Mr Jaspal Rana presented with an acute heart attack that was already three days old. He had been travelling and continued to experience chest pain before arriving at the hospital in a very critical condition,” Dr. Singh said.
Doctors found that the artery responsible for the heart attack was completely blocked. His heart’s pumping ability had reduced significantly, and he was suffering from heart failure.
However, with timely medical intervention and intensive care, Rana’s condition improved remarkably. The hospital said he had recovered well and was even considered fit for discharge.
“Mr Rana had recovered significantly and was fit for discharge today. However, he unfortunately suffered a sudden cardiac rupture while asleep, which led to his demise,” Dr. Singh said.
Cardiac rupture is a rare but life-threatening complication that can occur after a heart attack, particularly in patients who reach medical care late. The damaged heart muscle can become weak and, in rare cases, tear, causing sudden deterioration.
Dr. Singh highlighted that delayed presentation after a heart attack increases the risk of severe complications, including cardiac rupture, which can sometimes result in sudden death despite successful initial treatment.
Rana’s unexpected demise has sent shockwaves through India’s shooting fraternity. Known for his contribution to Indian shooting and for mentoring several young athletes, he played a key role in shaping the careers of many shooters.
His death also serves as a reminder of the importance of recognising early warning signs of a heart attack, including persistent chest pain, breathlessness, unusual fatigue, or discomfort, and seeking immediate medical attention rather than waiting for symptoms to settle.
