Piperacillin with Tazobactam
Piperacillin with Tazobactam is a combination antibiotic that includes Piperacillin, an extended-spectrum penicillin, and Tazobactam, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. This combination is effective against a wide range of bacterial infections, particularly those caused by organisms producing beta-lactamase enzymes. Piperacillin with tazobactam is used to treat a wide variety of bacterial infections. It is a penicillin antibiotic. It works by stopping the growth of bacteria.-Intra-Abdominal Infections: Used for treating infections within the abdominal cavity. -Lower Respiratory Tract Infections: Effective against pneumonia and other respiratory infections. -Skin and Soft Tissue Infections: Treats infections involving the skin and underlying tissues. -Urinary Tract Infections: Used for complicated urinary tract infections. -In moderate to sereve infections caused by piperacillin resistant, piperacillin/tazobactam suspectible, beta lactamase producing strains, in appendicitis, peritonitis, skin/soft tissue infection, lower respiratory tract infections, infection in neutropenic patients, intra abdominal infection and UTI.
-Dosage is determined based on the specific infection, patient factors, and susceptibility of the causative bacteria. Piperacillin with Tazobactam is typically administered intravenously. -IV infusion over 30 min. The usual total daily dose for adults is 12/1.5g 7 to 10 days given 4.5g every 8 hrs
-Hypersensitivity: Avoid in patients with known hypersensitivity to piperacillin, tazobactam, or other beta-lactam antibiotics. -History of Severe Allergic Reactions: Caution in patients with a history of severe allergic reactions to penicillins or other beta-lactam antibiotics.
-Renal Impairment: Adjustments in dosage may be necessary in patients with renal dysfunction. -Hematologic Monitoring: Regular monitoring of blood counts is recommended during prolonged therapy. -Clostridium difficile-associated Diarrhea: Antibiotic-associated diarrhea, including C. difficile-associated diarrhea, may occur; evaluate if diarrhea persists. -Before using piperacillin/tazobactam, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to it; or to other antibiotics; or if you have any other allergies. -Common side effects may include nausea, diarrhea, and injection site reactions. Serious side effects are rare but may include allergic reactions, superinfections, and changes in blood clotting parameters. -Nausea, constipation, diarrhea, headache, or trouble sleeping may occur.
-Aminoglycosides: Enhanced antibacterial effect when used concomitantly. -Probenecid: May increase and prolong the therapeutic levels of piperacillin.
