Stroke: The silent killer

Despite advances in the field of managing strokes, the disease continues to claim large number of lives each year in India. According toavailable data in 2019, over 6,90,000 people across India lost their lives to strokes making it the fourth largest cause of death in the country.

In India, the Indian Global Burden of Disease Study1990-2019 estimated that stroke was the largest contributor to disability-adjusted life years (DALYs), and a chief contributor to deaths caused byneurological disorders, and the problem intensified even further during the COVID pandemic, experts say.
The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 revealed that a large proportion of stroke burden is borne by low and middle-income countries, where the age standardised death rates and DALYs are four times higher than the rich countries.
According to a recent study developing countries are seeing an absolute increase in stroke deaths by 36.7% among younger adults,while in developed nations they are showing a declining trend. In India most of the North-eastern states along with West Bengal and Orissa account for most of the reported stroke cases.
