Successful Removal of Rare Pituitary Tumor at Wockhardt Hospitals

A team led by Dr. Ashwin Borkar, Consultant Neurosurgeon, and Dr. Chandraveer Singh, Consultant Otorhinolaryngologist and Head & Neck Oncosurgeon at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, has successfully removed a large pituitary gland tumor from a 63-year-old woman. The tumor, a Pituitary Gland Macroadenoma measuring over 7 cm, was excised through a meticulous Transnasal Transsphenoidal Surgery. Post-surgery, the patient’s symptoms, including nasal blockage and headache, were completely resolved.

Mrs. Saleeba, a 63-year-old resident of Virar, had endured persistent nasal obstruction and discomfort for 15 months, which severely impacted her daily life. Despite consulting multiple doctors, she found no relief. Her condition worsened, prompting her to seek urgent care at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road.

Dr. Chandraveer Singh explained, “The patient presented with persistent nasal obstruction, dizziness, loss of appetite, and occasional headaches, despite having no significant past medical history. Initial examination revealed a large mass in the Nasopharynx. Subsequent nasal endoscopy, CT scans, and Paranasal Sinus computed tomography (PNS) confirmed a large pituitary tumor, measuring 7.3 x 4 x 4.9 cm, extending from the brain to the frontal bone and encroaching upon the Nasopharynx. Diagnosed with a Pituitary Adenoma—a benign growth on the pituitary gland—this macroadenoma is rare, affecting about 5 per 100,000 people. The size and location of the tumor necessitated delicate surgical intervention.”

Dr. Ashwin Borkar added, “We performed a sophisticated endoscopic tumor excision surgery through the nose, using tiny instruments and an endoscope camera. This minimally invasive procedure involves a small incision at the back of the nasal cavity, allowing for precise and safe tumor removal without external scarring. The surgery, which lasted 3 hours, is designed to minimize blood loss, reduce infection risk, and promote quicker recovery with minimal discomfort. The patient was discharged on the fifth day post-surgery.”

Without timely intervention, the patient could have faced severe complications such as meningitis, nasal bleeding, or loss of vision. The successful surgery not only removed the tumor but also resolved all of the patient’s symptoms, leading to a smooth recovery.

Dr. Borkar and Dr. Singh’s exceptional work underscores Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road’s commitment to delivering world-class medical care with advanced technology and expertise. This case offers hope to others battling rare and life-threatening tumors requiring immediate medical attention.

Mrs. Saleeba expressed her gratitude, stating, “Thanks to the doctors’ relentless efforts, I have been given a new lease on life. All my symptoms have vanished, and I can now carry out my daily activities without any trouble.”
