Doctor Attempts to Escape Assault by Patient's Relatives

Doctor Assaulted After Patient Dies at Dr. Hedgewar Hospital

A tragic incident unfolded at Delhi’s Dr. Hedgewar Hospital, where a 67-year-old male patient passed away, leading to an assault on a resident doctor. The incident occurred as the patient’s attendants, distraught over the loss, attacked a female resident doctor, assuming their loved one had not been properly cared for. The attackers broke her fingernail and hurled footwear at her in a fit of rage.

This disturbing episode comes on the heels of recent news from Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, where resident doctors resumed emergency services after many of their demands were met, following the horrific rape and death of a 31-year-old female resident doctor.

Dr. Nadeem, President of the Resident Doctors’ Association (RDA) at Dr. Hedgewar Hospital, spoke about the unfortunate event, explaining that the patient had been admitted with complaints of breathlessness and chest pain. "The patient had been experiencing chest pain for the last three days and was previously under treatment at GB Pant Hospital," said Dr. Nadeem.

He added that the patient was uncooperative during an ECG test, making it difficult for the doctors to diagnose his condition promptly. As a result, he was referred to GTB Hospital, where his ECG showed no activity, and he was declared deceased.

This incident highlights the ongoing challenges faced by healthcare professionals in India, where doctors frequently encounter violent reactions from patients' families. Efforts to address the safety and security of medical staff remain a pressing concern across the nation.

The RDA, in a letter to the hospital CMO, has demanded the institutional FIR in the case.
