Successful Treatment of Multiple Myeloma by Onco-Life Cancer Centre

A 70-year-old man battling multiple myeloma, a rare and challenging type of blood cancer, has been successfully treated at Onco-Life Cancer Centre, Satara, under the care of Dr. Vinod Patil, Hematologist. The patient, diagnosed in December 2023, not only overcame the complex disease but also endured a stem cell transplant, granting him a new lease on life.

Multiple myeloma, a cancer affecting plasma cells, disrupts the body’s ability to produce antibodies essential for fighting infections. The patient also suffered from multiple comorbidities, including diabetes, hypertension, and pulmonary fibrosis, complicating his condition.

Treatment began with weekly chemotherapy sessions over six months, effectively controlling the disease. This was followed by five consecutive days of specialized injections to stimulate stem cell growth. Remarkably, the patient’s stem cells were successfully harvested on the first attempt—a critical milestone in his recovery.

“Throughout the treatment, the patient faced side effects such as a sore throat, mouth ulcers, diarrhea, and fever. Each complication was meticulously managed to ensure his stability. During the stem cell transplant, his white blood cell count was brought to zero through chemotherapy, creating an ideal environment for the procedure. The patient recovered well and was discharged in a stable condition,” explained Dr. Vinod Patil.

Dr. Patil emphasized the complexity of such transplants, which require precise management and a coordinated team effort. The success of this case was made possible by the dedicated efforts of a multidisciplinary team, including Dr. Uday Deshmukh, Chairman of Onco-Life Cancer Centre; Dr. Pratap Rajemahadik; Dr. Pushpalata Mottling; Dr. Prasad Kaware; Dr. Revati Pawar; along with nursing and pharmacy staff.

This milestone underscores the advancements in cancer care and the importance of a collaborative approach in tackling high-risk cases. It also provides hope for patients battling multiple myeloma, showcasing the life-saving potential of cutting-edge treatments and expert care.
