Healthcare Hiring Trends Shift in India: Women Take Center Stage
India’s healthcare sector is experiencing a transformative shift, with women healthcare professionals increasingly becoming the focus of new hiring efforts. Apna.co, India’s leading job and professional networking platform, has reported that over 60% of the 40,000 healthcare job postings in the last three months targeted female professionals. This surge in demand is being fueled by increased government spending on public health and private sector expansion in underserved Tier 2 and 3 cities.
Significant job growth has been noted across the country, with job postings rising by 35% in Tier 1 cities and an even steeper 50% in Tier 2 and 3 regions. Roles such as pharmacists, nurses, medical representatives, and physiotherapists are in particularly high demand. Tier 1 hubs like Mumbai, Bangalore, Delhi, Hyderabad, and Chennai collectively accounted for 22,000 job openings. Meanwhile, Tier 2 and 3 cities, including Jaipur, Lucknow, Bhubaneswar, Indore, and Nagpur, contributed 18,000 job postings, reflecting a growing emphasis on healthcare access in smaller cities.
“The healthcare sector is witnessing a transformative shift, with women increasingly at the helm,” said Nirmit Parikh, Founder and CEO of Apna.co. “Six out of every ten healthcare job opportunities are now targeted towards female professionals. There’s been a 30% rise in demand for women across critical care, diagnostics, and home healthcare, underscoring their pivotal role in the industry. By 2030, India’s private healthcare sector is projected to add eight million jobs, presenting tremendous leadership opportunities, especially in roles traditionally underrepresented by women.”
Major healthcare providers such as Medplus, Tata 1mg, Pharmeasy, Wellness Forever, Vijaya Diagnostics, Medkart, Apollo Pharmacy, and Portea Medical are at the forefront of this growth. In Tier 1 cities, roles like pharmacists, optometrists, dental assistants, and operation theatre technicians are seeing a surge in demand. Meanwhile, Tier 2 and 3 cities are focusing on roles such as nurses, attendants, medical representatives, pathologists, and lab technicians.
In response to these trends, Apna.co has launched "Frontline," India’s largest virtual healthcare job fair. The initiative aims to simplify hiring and increase job accessibility for healthcare professionals across India. “Frontline” reflects Apna.co’s commitment to supporting underserved communities and promoting inclusivity in healthcare hiring practices.
Apna.co’s recent analysis of the healthcare job market highlights both opportunities and challenges faced by frontline professionals. By addressing skill gaps and empowering young professionals, the platform aims to keep pace with the sector’s rapid evolution.
As the healthcare sector expands, women are poised to play a vital role in its growth. Through targeted recruitment and initiatives like “Frontline,” the industry is not only addressing immediate workforce needs but also building a more inclusive and effective healthcare system for the future.
