Meet the Hero Nurse Who Took on Warsones, Pandemics, and Fear to Save Lives
In a tale of extraordinary courage and unwavering dedication, Nurse Maria Victoria Juan from the Philippines has been honored with the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award 2024, receiving an impressive prize of INR 2 crore. The award ceremony, held in Bengaluru, India, brought together prominent figures like Bollywood actress Sonali Bendre, Karnataka Health Minister Mr Dinesh Gundu Rao, and Aster DM Healthcare Founder Dr. Azad Moopen. Yet, the night belonged to Maria, a nurse whose remarkable journey has redefined what it means to serve humanity.
Maria’s story is one of grit and innovation. As a Colonel in the Reserve Force of the Armed Forces of the Philippines, she has dedicated her life to saving lives in some of the toughest conditions imaginable. Her groundbreaking work in creating the first aeromedical evacuation system in the Philippine Armed Forces transformed how casualties are treated in conflict zones. The system ensures that wounded soldiers can receive rapid evacuation and critical care, greatly improving their chances of survival.
But Maria’s contributions didn’t stop there. At the age of 54, she embarked on a challenging nine-month aeromedical training program. Overcoming her fears of flying and deepwater swimming, she pushed herself through rigorous exercises, including 1-mile ocean swims, helicopter underwater escape drills, and 200 hours of emergency ambulance duty. Maria’s determination to lead by example set a new benchmark for what it means to be a military nurse.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, her leadership shone once again as she spearheaded the establishment of the Endurun Mega Swabbing Center. Training troops as medical swabbers and coordinating healthcare professionals, the center conducted nearly 500,000 COVID-19 tests, a critical contribution to the nation’s pandemic response.
Maria’s impact extends beyond healthcare into environmental advocacy. She pioneered the use of vetiver grass technology to combat soil erosion and water pollution, bringing sustainable solutions to underserved communities. Her multi-faceted contributions illustrate a deep commitment not just to saving lives but to improving the quality of life for countless individuals.
In her acceptance speech, Maria was characteristically humble. She reflected on her journey, saying, “This recognition isn’t just about me. It’s about the courage of the soldiers I serve, the resilience of the Filipino people, and the tireless dedication of nurses worldwide. We put ourselves in harm’s way to save lives, and this award is a tribute to all of us.”
The Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award, launched by Aster DM Healthcare in 2021, celebrates the often-unacknowledged contributions of nurses across the globe. This year, the award received 78,000 applications from 202 countries, underscoring the immense impact of the nursing community.
The event also featured a heartfelt message from Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General of the World Health Organization, who applauded the efforts of the finalists and recognized Aster DM Healthcare’s initiative to highlight the vital role of nurses in healthcare systems worldwide.
Dr. Azad Moopen, reflecting on Maria’s achievements, called her an embodiment of nursing excellence. He emphasized that the award is a platform to honor the countless nurses who go above and beyond to make a difference in people’s lives.
The other nine finalists, representing diverse countries and equally inspiring stories, were also celebrated for their extraordinary contributions. Their collective work showcased the resilience, compassion, and skill that define the nursing profession.
Maria’s story is a powerful reminder of the quiet yet transformative impact nurses have on the world. It shines a light on the resilience and dedication that often goes unnoticed but forms the backbone of healthcare. In honoring Maria, the Aster Guardians Global Nursing Award has not only celebrated her achievements but has also brought global attention to the profound influence nurses have on individuals, families, and communities everywhere.
