Fortis Gurugram Opens India’s First AV Fistula Clinic to Help Dialysis Patients Live Better
In a big step towards improving the lives of people on dialysis, Fortis Memorial Research Institute (FMRI), Gurugram, has started India’s first AV Fistula Care Clinic—a special clinic that focuses only on taking care of the blood vessel access (called AV fistula) used during dialysis.
For those who don’t know, a good AV fistula is a lifeline for dialysis patients. But many people only visit a doctor when something goes wrong—like blocked access or failed needle pricks. This new clinic is different. It’s all about preventing problems before they happen. To mark the launch, Fortis also held a National AV Fistula Masterclass, led by Dr. Himanshu Verma, Director of Vascular & Endovascular Surgery at FMRI. More than 160 dialysis technicians from across India attended. They shared real challenges they face daily, such as difficulty in inserting needles or spotting hidden problems that can be dangerous if missed. “Taking care of a patient’s fistula isn’t just a job—it’s what keeps them alive,” said Dr. Himanshu Verma.
“With this new clinic, we want to catch problems early and help patients avoid unnecessary suffering. The goal is to help them stay healthier and live longer.” One of the clinic’s highlights is a simple but powerful idea: teaching patients to check their fistula on their own. Dr. Verma has developed an easy way called the Self AV Fistula Examination to help patients notice changes before they turn serious. This helps them stay involved in their own care.
The clinic also provides regular check-ups, early consultations with vascular experts, and special training for dialysis staff—especially on how to handle tricky needle insertions. And that’s not all. Fortis is planning to add services like mental health support, diet advice, and exercise tips to support patients in every way possible.“Many patients are told to see a vascular surgeon but delay it, which leads to serious issues,” explained Dr. Verma. “By bringing everything under one roof, we’re making it easier for them to get the right help at the right time.”
Yash Rawat, Facility Director at FMRI, called the launch a game-changer.“Dialysis is already hard on patients. This clinic gives them peace of mind that their access is being looked after properly. It’s a big step towards better, safer care,” he said. In India, thousands of people need dialysis every year, but many suffer due to poor access care. Fortis’ new clinic is showing that with the right care at the right time, things can change for the better.
With this first-of-its-kind clinic, Fortis Gurugram is not just treating patients—it’s leading a new way forward in dialysis care, where prevention, awareness, and compassion come together.
