Wockhardt Hospitals Earns Prestigious Accreditation as Advanced Stroke Centre

Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road has been awarded the Accreditation of Advanced Stroke Centre by the Quality and Accreditation Institute (QAI) – Centre for Accreditation of Health & Social Care. This recognition sets a new standard in stroke care, making Wockhardt Hospitals the first in Maharashtra to achieve this honor. The hospital offers comprehensive, round-the-clock stroke care, utilizing state-of-the-art technology and skilled expertise for acute care and rehabilitation.

This achievement follows previous accolades for the Wockhardt Stroke Centre, including a Platinum rating in 2022 and a Gold Rating in 2023 from the World Stroke Organization Angels Awards.

Comprehensive Stroke Care

Stroke is a major health issue in India, requiring immediate medical intervention. Wockhardt Hospitals has established a well-equipped Advanced Stroke Centre and formed a Stroke Support Group to aid in rehabilitation. Upon a stroke patient's arrival, a special code is announced to activate the stroke protocol, ensuring rapid treatment. The patient is quickly assessed and taken to the Neuroimaging suite. If an ischemic stroke is confirmed and the patient is within the 4.5-hour window, IV thrombolysis (clot buster) is initiated within one hour. For large vessel occlusions, mechanical thrombectomy is performed within 90 minutes by a Neurointerventionalist. In cases of brain swelling or bleeding, a life-saving decompressive craniotomy is conducted by the Neurosurgery team. Post-treatment, patients are monitored in the ICU, and neurorehabilitation is initiated.

Ongoing Training and Community Engagement

Regular NIHSS training and certification for staff ensure the team remains skilled and motivated. Dr. Pavan Pai, Consultant Interventional Neurologist, highlighted the hospital's efforts in stroke management, stating, "The growing incidence of brain strokes in India demands prompt and efficient medical intervention. Our advanced stroke care protocol and dedicated team enable swift treatment, significantly improving patient outcomes."

Commitment to Excellence

Dr. Pankaj Dhamija, Center Head at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road, expressed pride in the QAI accreditation. During the assessment, various aspects of stroke patient care were evaluated, including the timeliness of IV thrombolysis and mechanical thrombectomy. Patient interviews confirmed high satisfaction with the care received. The hospital's efforts to raise stroke awareness in the community were also acknowledged.

Over the past year, the center treated over 150 stroke patients, serving a wide area from Boisar and Dahanu Road in the north to Kandivali in the south. The hospital also organizes community stroke awareness programs, such as the stroke marathon, and has a special Code White for stroke emergencies. The state-of-the-art facilities include a cath lab, ICU, CT and MRI facilities, and a thrombolysis facility. The hospital provides 24/7 access to a full-time Interventional Neurologist and dedicated Stroke Nurse and maintains a Stroke Helpline Number – 8108181081.
